چکیده

Both partially articulated specimens and dissociated marginal ossicles form the basis for erection of two new species Late Cretaceous goniasterids from Mons Liège-Limburg basins (Belgium) Hannover area (Germany). Chomataster breizh sp. nov., which recalls type species, acules Spencer, 1913, but differs in several respects, is based on a partial external mould frame disc arms flint (upper Campanian Spiennes Chalk Formation; Basin), as well more or less complete individual, preserving small, spherical spines granules encased nodule upper Maastrichtian Nekum Member (Maastricht Basin). In Ch. supero- inferomarginals bear close-set granule pits, varying sizes, bivalved alveolar scars pedicellariae; median superomarginals all lack large, crater-shaped spine pits – such are found only disc/arm transition along arms. Dissociated inferomarginal lower northeast Belgium, previously recorded either indeterminate astropectinids Nymphaster obtusus (Forbes, 1848) var. nov. sp., respectively, here assigned to mudzborgh This characterised by row 3–5 large aboral lateral surfaces superomarginals; have an angular profile close cover pits. tethysiensis Villier, 2001, Landes (southwest France; Villier Odin, 2001) appears best accommodated well, because arm alternate rather than meet over mid-radial line.

Antarctic Starfish (Echinodermata, Asteroidea) from the ANDEEP3 expedition

This dataset includes information on sea stars collected during the ANDEEP3 expedition, which took place in 2005. The expedition focused on deep-sea stations in the Powell Basin and Weddell Sea.Sea stars were collected using an Agassiz trawl (3m, mesh-size 500µm), deployed in 16 stations during the ANTXXII/3 (ANDEEP3, PS72) expedition of the RV Polarstern. Sampling depth ranged from 1047 to 493...

Timing of fission in the starfish Allostichaster capensis (Echinodermata: Asteroidea) in laboratory.

Timing of fission in the fissiparous starfish Allostichaster capensis under laboratory conditions is described. A. capensis generally splits across the disc along the fission plane during the spring, and then each half regenerates the missing arms during the rest of the year. The fission process can last eight hours. The healing process starts immediately after fission. A. capensis has impressi...

Trophic ecology of deep-sea Asteroidea (Echinodermata) from eastern Canada

Asteroids (sea stars) can be important predators in benthic communities and are often present in ecologically important and vulnerable deep-sea coral and sponge habitats. However, explicit studies on the trophic ecology of deep-sea asteroids are rare. We investigated the diets of seven species of deep-sea asteroid from the bathyal zone of Newfoundland and Labrador, eastern Canada. A multifacete...

Asterinid seastars from the Mozambique Channel (Echinodermata: Asteroidea: Asterinidae).

A new fissiparous asterinid seastar Aquilonastra chantalae sp. nov. is described from Europa Island, one of the Scattered Islands (Les îles Éparses) in the Mozambique Channel. It is compared with the fissiparous asterinid Aquilonastra conandae O'Loughlin & Rowe from the Mascarene Islands. A table of distinguishing diagnostic characters is provided. The asterinid Aquilonastra richmondi O'Loughli...

Molecular phylogeny of the Valvatacea (Asteroidea: Echinodermata)

The Valvatacea is one the most ecologically important, taxonomically diverse, and widespread groups of postPalaeozoic (i.e. modern) Asteroidea. Classification within the group has been historically problematic. We present a comprehensively sampled, three-gene (12S, 16S, early-stage histone H3) molecular phylogenetic analysis of the Valvatacea. We include five of the six families within the Paxi...
